During my time as President the Chamber had ups and downs to the point that we did consider having to disband. However, with a dedicated committee, we struggled through and worked hard until we were able to return to a healthy Chamber with good attendances at our monthly breakfast meetings.
The Southside Chamber was proactive in representing the business community, with some examples being:-
• Queensland Chamber of Commerce (now CCIQ)
o Brisbane Regional Council
The President joined with other chamber presidents from the Brisbane and Ipswich areas for monthly Council meetings and helped CCIQ by input into developing business policy
• Gateway Upgrade Project to build the second Gateway bridge
The Southside Chamber President was a member of the Leighton Abi Group Community Consultative Committee with particular interest taken in the Gateway to Mt Gravatt-Capalaba Road section of the Project
• Mains Road and Kessels Road Intersection Upgrade Project
The chamber represented the business community on the consultative Committee in the early stages. The chamber did propose an alternative to relieve the congestion – being to develop/expand the capacity of Boundary Road into Beenleigh Road to link up with the Gateway Motorway. This would involve joining the two Boundary Roads via a tunnel under Archerfield Airport. This would allow the Ipswich to Rocklea heavy transports to be directed away from Kessels Road altogether.
Unfortunately, our proposal was not considered at that time.
